Supported Devices & System Requirements

ReadTheory is a web-based reading platform. You don’t need to install an app — students and teachers can use ReadTheory on supported devices with an internet connection and a compatible browser.

Supported devices

ReadTheory is designed and optimized for:

  • Chromebooks

  • iPads and Android tablets

  • Desktop and laptop computers (Windows, macOS, ChromeOS)

Phones: ReadTheory may load on phones, but the student experience is not optimized for small screens. For best results, we recommend using a tablet, Chromebook, or computer.

Supported browsers

We support the latest versions of:

  • Google Chrome (recommended)

  • Apple Safari

  • Microsoft Edge

The following browsers are not officially supported:

  • Internet Explorer (IE)

  • Firefox

  • Opera

If you’re having trouble, first make sure you’re using one of the supported browsers and that it’s fully up to date.

Minimum requirements

To use ReadTheory smoothly, you’ll need:

  • A stable internet connection

  • A supported browser (see above) with:

    • JavaScript enabled

    • Cookies enabled

    • Local storage enabled

  • Audio support (speakers or headphones) for the optional Read Aloud feature

School network & filtering notes

If you’re using ReadTheory on a school network, please allowlist:

  • readtheory.org

  • readtheory.com

  • readtheoryapp.com

  • All subdomains of the above

Blocking cookies, JavaScript, or local storage can prevent ReadTheory from working properly.

Accessibility

ReadTheory supports screen readers and common browser accessibility tools such as zoom and text scaling.

Troubleshooting quick checks

If something isn’t working:

  1. Refresh the page

  2. Confirm you’re using a supported browser

  3. Update your browser to the latest version

  4. Disable extensions that may interfere (ad blockers, script blockers)

  5. Clear cache/cookies and sign in again

  6. If on a school network, try another network to confirm whether filtering is the cause
